Trooping the Colour is a yearly ceremony in London that celebrates the British monarch's official birthdayIt's also known as the Sovereign's Birthday Parade. 
What happens:
    • The ceremony takes place on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall 
       
    • The monarch receives a royal salute and inspects the troops 
       
    • The regimental color is carried through the ranks of soldiers 
       
  • The monarch rides in a parade up the Mall to Buckingham Palace 
     
  • The monarch accepts a salute from a dais at Buckingham Palace 
     
  • The royal family appears on the palace balcony for a Royal Air Force flypast 
     
Why is it called Trooping the Colour? 
 
  • "Colours" refers to the flags or standards that represent each regiment
  • Officers would march up and down in front of the troops, waving their flags, so soldiers could identify their unit
When does it happen? 
 
  • Trooping the Colour takes place on a Saturday in June
Who participates? 
 
  • The Household Division's personal troops, including the Foot Guards and the Household Cavalry
  • Hundreds of horses and musicians
